Dr. Frank Muhereza facilitating a module on Writing Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Reports at StrongMinds Uganda Officies in Bugolobi.
The Applied Research Skills and Report Writing training programme for StrongMinds Uganda is part of a series of tailored training programmes provided by Centre for Basic Research (CBR) targeting institutions interested in strengthening the capacities of their programme staff. The training programme is in line with the mission of CBR, which is: to generate and disseminate knowledge by conducting research of social, economic, and political significance to Uganda in particular and Africa in general, so as to influence policy, raise consciousness and improve quality of life’
Abstract
The training process combined a variety of methods: participant-centred experiential learning, practice sessions
based on BoU reports, facilitator-guided presentations and discussions, take-home assignments, report critiques,
mid-training assessment, and end-of-training evaluation. Overall, participation was very commendable. Facilitators
also ensured full delivery of all planned modules and sessions. The training environment was conducive to
learning. The content, however, was too deep and broad to be compressed in few days, and the non-residential
aspect reduced trainees’ ability to fully concentrate on assignments. While the training covered the main basics,
it was not able to address department-specific challenges faced by the trainees from different departments or
units.
This report is divided into six sections. The introduction is in section one. Section two elaborates the training
methods used. Section three provides an assessment of the Bank’s report writing skills’ training needs. The delivery
of the training and the issues that emerged under the various modules and training sessions are discussed in
section four. Section five presents an assessment of the training participants. The concluding remarks, including
key lessons learnt and recommendations for Bank of Uganda and Centre for Basic Research, are provided in section
six. Annexed to the report are: the terms of reference; lists of BoU officials who attended the Training Needs
Assessment Meetings; lists of BoU staff who attended the training Course, and the Training programme.
