Centre for Basic Research Hosts Bank of Uganda Staff for a Transformative Week-Long Training

The Centre for Basic Research (CBR) recently concluded a highly impactful week-long training program for the staff of the Bank of Uganda (BoU), focusing on Applied Research Skills and Report Writing. This comprehensive training aimed to build capacity for conducting impactful research and fostering informed decision-making within the organization.

Key Highlights from the Training

  1. Day 1: Foundations of Critical Thinking and Writing
    • Dr. F.E. Muhereza engaged participants in an interactive post-lunch session on critical thinking, reading, and writing.
    • The session highlighted the importance of moving beyond mere understanding to questioning and challenging information—a cornerstone of impactful research.
  2. Day 2: Writing for Influence and Effective Communication
    • Mr. Richard Ssewakiryanga, CBR’s Executive Director, guided participants on crafting policy briefs, position papers, circulars, internal memos, and mastering public speaking for impactful communication.
    • Mr. John Senkumba led a practical session on literature review and interviewing skills, providing participants with tools to conduct effective reviews and extract valuable information.
  3. Day 3: Mastering Report Formats and Styles
    • Dr. Faith Ahabyona delved into the nuances of standard vs. function-specific report formats and styles, equipping staff with skills to tailor reports to their intended functions.
    • Dr. Sabastiano Rwengabo facilitated an engaging post-lunch session on developing impactful report sections, including abstracts, introductions, executive summaries, and conclusions.
  4. Day 4: Referencing and Group Writing
    • Dr. David Okurut provided an in-depth guide on various referencing styles, including APA, Harvard, and Chicago, to enhance participants’ research and documentation skills.
    • In the afternoon, participants engaged in a hands-on group writing activity, crafting response papers and critiquing a sample BoU report. This session encouraged collaboration and critical analysis, leading to insightful recommendations for improvement.

The training culminated in an inspiring session led by Mr. Richard Ssewakiryanga, who applauded the participants for their active engagement and urged them to implement the skills learned both in their professional roles and personal lives.

As a token of appreciation, the Centre for Basic Research presented Bank of Uganda staff with one of the first publications of Centre for Basic Research, symbolizing CBR’s unwavering commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration.
