Seminar 1:Navigating Uganda’s Political Future

Navigating Uganda’s Political Future

Tectonic Shifts, Trends, and Contestations in the 2026 Elections and Beyond

The Centre for Basic Research is thrilled to announce the launch of our latest project, “Navigating Uganda’s Political Future: Tectonic Shifts, Trends, and Contestations in the 2026 Elections and Beyond.” As Uganda gears up for its 2026 elections, this initiative aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the electoral processes and the broader political landscape in Uganda.

🔍 Project Highlights:

In-depth Analysis: Building on insights from the 2016 elections, we will explore the dynamic and often contentious nature of Uganda’s elections at all levels — community, local government, and national.

Key Focus Areas: The project will investigate the potential candidacy of a long-serving incumbent president, the growing influence of his son, and the emerging and established opposition leaders. It will explore how these variables affect the electoral process and outcomes. The study will also examine citizen and civil society organization (CSO) engagement, media involvement, and the popular cultural expressions related to electoral processes, as well as initiatives from stakeholders that shape Uganda’s political landscape.

Youth Engagement: With 75% of the electorate under 35 and the growing influence of Gen Z and other generations, these elections are set to significantly reshape Uganda’s political landscape.

Multidisciplinary Approach: For the next 18 months, our community of researchers from all walks of life will conduct ‘basic research’, sensemaking seminars, and multidisciplinary workshops to delve into the breadth and depth of the electoral processes and attendant socioeconomic issues.

📚 Outcomes:

Publications: We will produce an anthology and related research products, including monthly think pieces, offering a nuanced analysis of Uganda’s electoral dynamics.

  • Citizen Engagement: By fostering dialogues and debates, we aim to build a culture of tolerance and constructive engagement.
  • Policy Recommendations: The project will provide evidence-based recommendations for electoral reform, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting political stability.

Join us on this journey to explore the future of democracy in Uganda and contribute to shaping a more inclusive and prosperous political landscape. Stay tuned for updates and insights from our research!
