Centre for Basic Research completed the implementation of an applied research project titled: ‘Enhancing Agribusiness EconomicOpportunities of Rural Women and Girls’.
The project which was funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) ended in September 2021. The overall objective of the project was to contribute to the improvement of the technical capacity and economic status of vulnerable women and youth in rural areas by enhancing their opportunities for employment in agri-business. The specific objectives of the project are to:
(a) examine agribusiness sector growth and its drivers, sectorial composition, policy environment, value chain and linkages
with other sectors, and contribution to the economy;
(b) identify, characterize, and determine the potential and
challenges of the small-scale agribusiness sector to generate productive employment for women and youth;
(c) build and enhance the capacity of rural women and young entrepreneurs to sustain economic activities and find
employment through village skills development and apprenticeship training programs;
(d) identify and document innovative best practices that favor women and youth, and recommend practical policy-relevant results and directions on how to support and scale up agri-business development in Africa.
